Group Therapy

At Helping Hands Psychotherapy, we believe healing doesn’t happen in isolation. In a group of your peers, something powerful happens: stories overlap, courage grows, and the weight of being the only one carrying a struggle begins to lift.

Group members learn from one another, support each other, and practice new ways of relating and understanding. You will discover that connection, in combination with therapy, can be deeply therapeutic.

“There is something magical that happens in group therapy.  In group, we help individuals share stories, identify emotions, learn skills, build connection, and find belonging.  I often say-there is nothing that can replace the feeling you get when you hear someone else describe what you have been feeling- and thought you were the only one.

Group work is transformational, it doesn’t just treat symptoms, it promotes healing & cultivates community.”

-Pauline Walfisch, LCSW, PMH-C

Healing in community often brings insights and relief that individual therapy alone can’t offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, we do work with many insurance plans. Our intake coordinators will check your specific insurance plan and let you know how that would cover care at HHP. When using your insurance isn't an option, we are proud to offer a fee structure that aims to make care accessible, while still allowing us to provide high quality care. You can find more information on our Fees and Insurance page.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Scheduling an appointment is easy. You can schedule an introductory call at 516-442-1116. Let us know how we can help and we will call you as soon as possible- usually the same/next business day.

I can barely keep my head above water as a parent, how do I fit in therapy?

We know that fitting in time for therapy is hard when you already feel overwhelmed. Our therapists understand that challenge and will work with you to find a time that makes sense for you. We welcome babies in session and know that you are doing your best. We’ll honor this time that you set aside for yourself.

How would group therapy be helpful?

Our therapist-led groups provide a safe, supportive space to process the emotional and relational impact of infertility, pregnancy loss, and reproductive trauma. Being in a group can help reduce isolation and shame, foster connection with others who truly get it, and help you regulate intense emotions while rebuilding trust in your body and a sense of control. Through psychoeducation, grounding techniques, and shared reflection, you will work toward healing, meaning-making, increasing resilience, and renewed hope. The group can support you in navigating complex experiences like relationship issues, treatment decisions, family building options, or pregnancy at a pace that feels good to you. We have short term groups which have a focus on learning skills to manage the stress, as well as an ongoing weekly group for finding calm, connection, and meaning through the uncertainty of infertility. A space where healing and possibility meet.

How is “graduation” from group handled?

We will collaborate with you and the group as a whole to determine when graduation feels right. Usually this happens around the same time you “graduate” from your reproductive endocrinologist. Some members may remain longer Readiness often becomes clear when the support needs of someone who is newly pregnant naturally begin to differ from the ongoing needs of those still in active fertility treatment or early loss recovery.

What if my partner also needs therapy?

We know that families are complex and are here to support each person so that you can support each other.

What can I expect from group therapy?

Our therapist led groups provide a safe, supportive space to process the emotional and relational impact of various life transitions. Being in group can help reduce isolation and shame, foster connection with others who truly get it, and help you regulate intense emotions. Through psychoeducation, grounding techniques, and shared reflection, you will work toward healing, meaning-making and increase resilience. Group can support you in navigating complex experiences at a pace that feels good to you.

How long do I have to be in group therapy?

We have short term groups which have a focus on learning skills to manage the stress, as well as an ongoing weekly group for finding calm, connection, and ongoing support. Both offer a space where healing and possibility meet. Participation in any group is voluntary, which means you can end your participation at any time and for any reason. However, planned termination is encouraged whenever possible to support closure for both you and the group members. Members are asked to discuss their intention to leave with the facilitator in advance so that an appropriate final session can be arranged. Unplanned absences or abrupt endings can feel disruptive to others and may limit the opportunity for reflection and closure. The group facilitator will also periodically check in to make sure that the goals of the group still feel aligned.

Will I be overwhelmed hearing other people's problems?

It’s completely natural to wonder about that. Our groups are intentionally small and skillfully facilitated by trained clinicians who pace conversations and make sure no one feels flooded or forgotten. Your group therapist will guide the flow, model compassion, and help everyone feel emotionally safe and seen. Many participants find that listening to others’ experiences can actually bring relief, perspective, and a deeper sense of connection. Healing happens both in being heard and in realizing we’re not alone in what we carry.
