Akyra Horry-Sams is a New York State Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and graduate of Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare. She is a queer Black woman passionate about Black maternal health and specializes in perinatal mental health, maternal wellness, relationships, and life transitions.
Akyra provides individual and couples therapy using a trauma-informed, strengths-based, and culturally responsive approach. She also incorporates a creative approach to therapy to support self-expression, insight, and healing.
She has clinical experience in a perinatal psychiatry setting providing psychotherapy and facilitating therapeutic groups. Her work focuses on supporting clients navigating pregnancy, postpartum experiences, anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress, with an emphasis on building resilience and healthier relationship patterns.
As a DONA-trained birth and postpartum doula, Akyra brings an integrated understanding of mental health and maternal well-being. She is especially passionate about supporting Black maternal health and helping couples strengthen communication, trust, and connection.
Akyra believes healing happens through connection, creativity, and building on existing strengths. She is also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., committed to service, advocacy, and community uplift.
