About the event

Clients with PTSD, depression, and anxiety often experience somatic symptoms, which are physical expressions of psychological distress. These symptoms commonly appear as chronic pain, digestive issues, or sexual dysfunction. For clinicians, addressing somatic complaints can be complex. On one hand, the physical discomfort is very real for the client, making it important to build trust and validate their experience while exploring potential psychological roots. On the other hand, the close link between mental and physical health means these individuals may also be more susceptible to actual medical conditions, making it difficult to distinguish between somatic symptoms and chronic illness. This presentation will offer practical strategies to help clinicians better recognize, engage with, and support clients dealing with somatic expressions of emotional pain.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify what somatization is, how it manifests itself in clients across the lifespan, how it is related to the

mind-body connection and how it manifests…
