Postpartum Depression & Anxiety

also known as:  PPD, PPA, PMADs,

Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders

Are you pregnant and not feeling the way you think you should?  Did you give birth in the past year and find yourself feeling sad or anxious when you are "supposed to be" happy?

While it was once thought that "postpartum depression" started only after giving birth, we now know that for many woman symptoms begin during pregnancy.  We also know that symptoms don't always include depression.  Sometimes anxiety is the most troubling symptom.

We treat depression and anxiety during pregnancy as well as in the postpartum period.  We know what that feels like for you and we know how to help.

Up to 1 in 5 women (and up to 1 in 10 fathers) experience significant symptoms of depression or anxiety in pregnancy or postpartum.  Symptoms may include:

  • Feeling sad or crying frequently

  • Finding little enjoyment in things

  • Having trouble sleeping even when the baby sleeps, or sleeping too much

  • Changes in appetite- eating too much or too little

  • Low energy and finding it hard to care for yourself or your baby

  • Feeling worried, panicky or afraid

  • Feeling angry or irritable

  • Having trouble bonding with your baby

  • Missing your "old life" and wondering if you "made a mistake"

  • Having scary or upsetting thoughts about yourself or your baby

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you may be experiencing a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder.

There is help and you do not have to go through this alone.  With treatment you can prevent symptoms from worsening and begin to feel better.  Our therapists specialize in mental health around pregnancy and postpartum.  We understand what you are experiencing. You will find we are a place of acceptance, understanding and no judgments!
